Discover the delicate balance of life! This kit introduces students to the fundamentals of food webs and the process of photosynthesis through hands-on modeling and experiments. Students will build food chains and webs using cards or models representing producers, consumers, and decomposers, then investigate how energy flows through ecosystems.
Activities include a simple photosynthesis experiment using leaves, light, and carbon dioxide indicators to demonstrate how plants convert sunlight into energy. Designed for 24 children working in pairs, the kit includes all materials, printed guides, and video instructions.
Time Commitment:
Two 45-minute class periods or one 1.5-hour session
Suggested Grades:
Grades 3–6
TEKS Alignment:
-
3.9(A): Identify sources of energy in food chains
-
4.9(A): Describe relationships among organisms in food chains and food webs
-
5.9(B): Explore photosynthesis as a process that produces food in plants
-
5.9(C): Recognize that energy flows through ecosystems in one direction
