Explore the universe the way scientists do—with light! In this kit, students investigate how satellites and telescopes use light filters and spectrometers to observe distant stars and planets. Using hands-on materials, learners will explore how different light sources reveal different elements, just like astronomers discovering the composition of stars and other celestial bodies.
Each station includes activities with filters, spectrometers, and colored light sources, helping students understand how we study space from Earth. All supplies are included for 24 students working in pairs, with simple printed instructions and step-by-step video guides.
Time Commitment:
Two 45-minute class periods or one 1.5-hour session
Suggested Grades:
Grades 4–7
TEKS Alignment:
-
4.8(B): Describe how space tools (telescopes, satellites) help scientists study space
-
5.8(A): Differentiate among tools used to explore space
-
5.6(C): Explore visible light as part of the electromagnetic spectrum
-
7.9(A): Analyze spectra to determine the presence of elements in stars
